Authority for Consumers and Markets concludes: Energy suppliers charged fair prices during the energy crisis.

During the energy crisis, energy suppliers fairly passed on the costs they incurred to their customers. This is evident from research by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). Concerns about passing on cost increases more quickly than cost decreases also proved to be unfounded. The research shows that price variations were passed on evenly and fairly.

Significant Fluctuations
The ACM investigated the six largest energy suppliers over the period from 2021 through June 2023. There was concern that price increases might be passed on more quickly than price decreases, which could have resulted in higher profit margins for suppliers. However, this concern proved unfounded. Even during major market price fluctuations, such as those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis, suppliers passed on costs in a competitive and balanced way.

Fair Prices
The ACM’s mandate includes carefully monitoring the energy market to ensure fair prices. Energy Netherlands supports this effort and is pleased with the findings of the research.
